Styria’s air-quality ordinance switched on the Greater Graz driving ban on 1 June 2012, and it has always been aimed at freight: lorries of emission class Euro 2 or worse are kept out, and since 2018 that applies whatever the vehicle weighs, small vans included. A private car needs no sticker and is never checked for its Euro class. Offenders driving goods vehicles risk up to EUR 2,180. For a visitor the city is about the UNESCO-listed old town below the Schlossberg and its clock tower.

Park and walk the pedestrian centre
The old town around the Hauptplatz and Herrengasse is largely pedestrian and tram-served. Park in a central garage and walk. Austria’s national rules apply: 50 km/h in town, a 0.05% alcohol limit, and a vignette for motorways and expressways.
Up the Schlossberg
The hill rises straight from the old town. Climb it by the Schlossbergbahn funicular, the lift inside the rock, or the zigzag stairs, and look out from the Uhrturm over the red roofs.
When the car helps
Keep it for Styria: the southern wine roads, the castles, the route toward Slovenia, driven out from a central garage.

Winter tyres in Austria — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Austria whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 15 Apr.
- Legal winter tread minimum: 4 mm (5 mm for cross-ply (diagonal) tyres) — not the 1.6 mm figure most guides quote, which is the year-round minimum.
- Accepted marking: M+S (3PMSF not required in Austria)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: From €60 (Austrian transport ministry); up to €10,000 where other road users are endangered (ÖAMTC)
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Greater Graz is an IG-L remediation area, and the ban written into the Styrian air-quality ordinance applies to lorries of emission class Euro 2 or worse; since 1 January 2018 it covers every lorry regardless of weight, small vans included. Passenger cars need no sticker and face no Euro-class test. Just keep to the speed limits the signs show.
Mostly no. The historic centre around the Hauptplatz and Herrengasse is largely pedestrian and tram-served, with restricted vehicle access. Park in a garage at the edge and explore on foot; the centre is compact, and trams handle the longer hops across the city.
Take the Schlossbergbahn funicular, the lift cut into the hill, or the zigzag stairs from Schlossbergplatz. The wooded hill rises straight out of the old town and is crowned by the Uhrturm clock tower, the city's symbol. There is no reason to take the car.
Use a central underground garage at the edge of the pedestrian zone, then walk. Graz has a good tram network, so parking once and riding or walking is the easy way to get around. Street parking in the centre is paid and limited, and much of the old town is closed to general traffic anyway.
