Green sticker (Ruhr-wide), then park and ride
Since 1 July 2014 only the green sticker has been valid in the Ruhr zone. Diesel cars qualify from Euro 4 (or Euro 3 with a retrofitted filter) and petrol cars with a regulated catalytic converter. From 1 October 2026 a car with a German E-plate, or a foreign EV with the blue E badge, needs no sticker. German hire cars normally carry one; check the windscreen before you set off. Germany’s other limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas and 0.5 per mille alcohol, with zero for drivers under 21 and in their probationary period.
When the car helps
