Can your car enter Freiburg?
Freiburg lifted its Umweltzone on 22 April 2025, so a car of any emission class can now drive into the city without a green Umweltplakette, and no low-emission fine can be written here. What still shapes a visit is the layout: the old town around the Münster is mostly pedestrian, threaded by the Bächle, the narrow water channels that run along its gutters.

Is There an Environmental Zone in Freiburg?
No. The Umweltbundesamt register records Freiburg’s zone as withdrawn on 22 April 2025. Nothing is checked on your windscreen inside the city. If your route continues to a German city whose zone is still active, the green Plakette is required there, and missing it costs EUR 100.
Park at the edge, ride the tram
Central parking is limited and the old town is built for walking. Leave the car at a garage or a Park & Ride stop and use the VAG trams into the centre, the Münster and the market square. Germany’s general rules apply: 50 km/h in town, 0.05% blood alcohol, and zero alcohol for drivers under 21 or in their probationary period.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Black Forest: the Schauinsland road, the lakes and the clock-making valleys, driven out from a Park & Ride.

Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.
