Frankfurt’s green-sticker zone is not a pocket around the old town: it takes in the city inside the A3 and A5 motorway ring, so the banking towers, the rebuilt Römerberg square and Sachsenhausen across the river are all covered. Every car needs a green Umweltplakette on the windscreen, foreign plates included, and driving in without one costs EUR 100. The sticker itself is cheap, EUR 5 from the city’s offices, and hire cars already carry it.

The green sticker
Diesels qualify from Euro 4 (or Euro 3 with a particle filter), petrol cars with a regulated catalytic converter. Order the sticker before the trip or buy it at an inspection station such as TÜV or DEKRA. Germany’s general rules apply: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% blood alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 or in their probationary period.
Park outside, ride in
Central parking is limited. A Park & Ride with the S-Bahn or U-Bahn, or a garage at the edge of the centre, is the easy way to reach the Römer and the Museumsufer.
When the car helps
Frankfurt sits at a motorway crossroads next to a major airport. Keep the car for the Rheingau wine villages and the Taunus hills.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Without it the fine is EUR 100.

Historic vehicles on H plates are exempt, and since 1 October 2026 so are cars with a German E-plate or the blue E badge for foreign-registered EVs; other electric cars still need the green sticker.
Use a Park & Ride on the outskirts or a garage near the edge of the centre, then take the S-Bahn, U-Bahn or tram in. Central parking is limited and expensive, and the Römerberg and the riverside museums are best on foot.
Not for the city. The S-Bahn links the airport and the centre, and the U-Bahn and trams cover the rest. A car earns its place for the Rheingau wine villages or the Taunus hills, driven out from a Park & Ride.
