Foligno’s historic centre is guarded by electronic ZTL gates that admit authorised vehicles only, and each gate keeps its own hours: most switch on in the evening, while the via Santa Caterina gate is active around the clock. Access depends on authorisation, not on the car’s emission class, and an unauthorised entry is fined under the national code at EUR 83-332. Outside the gates, the flat Umbrian town is known for its Quintana joust and its tongue-in-cheek claim to be the centre of the world.

Gate by gate
- Via XX Settembre and via S. Giovanni dell’Acqua: from 18:30, later closing before holidays.
- Via Garibaldi: from 20:00, from 19:30 on Saturdays.
- Via Santa Caterina: 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Permits are issued by the comune, and short-term ones by the municipal police. Since December 2024, repeated camera passes in the same ZTL on the same day bring one fine, not several.
Park outside, walk the flat centre
Park outside the zone and walk the compact centre around Piazza della Repubblica and the cathedral. Italy’s urban limit is 50 km/h; the alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
A central Umbria base
Foligno is a rail junction and a practical base: keep the car for Assisi, Spello, Montefalco’s Sagrantino vineyards, Bevagna and the hill towns.
