Driving to Florence in 2026: Park Outside the Varchi

Florence’s walled centre is not one restricted area but five, lettered A, B, O, F and G, each ringed by its own camera gates. Sectors A, B and O are live Monday to Friday 07:30-20:00 and Saturday 07:30-16:00, every week of the year; from the first Thursday of April to the first Sunday of October a night ZTL adds Thursday, Friday and Saturday 23:00-03:00 across all five. Cross a varco without authorisation and the penalty is EUR 83-332 — once per zone per calendar day since December 2024, however many cameras log the car, and often posted on by the rental company months after the trip.

The notice that turns up in autumn

The pattern is always the same: a spring stay, a hotel found after two or three laps of the one-way system, nothing said at the time — and in October an envelope arrives from the rental desk with the fine and a handling fee attached. The lanes loop back on themselves, so drivers routinely trigger more than one gate before the signage makes sense; since 14 December 2024, article 198 c.2-bis counts those repeat entries into the same zone on one day as a single violation.

Ordinary Italian rules still apply outside the gates: 50 km/h in town, a 0.05% blood-alcohol limit. Inside the walls, the number that decides your trip is the one on the ZTL sign.

Park once, outside the walls

• Parcheggio Villa Costanza (Scandicci) — the sane choice. A large, inexpensive park-and-ride at the southern end of tram T1, roughly 20 minutes from the centre. Leave the car there for the whole stay.
• Parterre (by Piazza della Libertà) and the Beccaria garage both sit outside the gates and within an easy walk of the Duomo, if you would rather pay more to be closer.

Do not street-park inside the historic centre. Between resident-only bays and the sector boundaries it is the quickest route to a ticket, with or without a ZTL crossing.

Reaching a hotel inside the zone

E-mail ahead. A hotel inside the ZTL can log your plate in the comune’s system for a short unloading window, but the entry must exist before the camera reads you. Send the plate and arrival time, get written confirmation, then take one clean route in and one clean route out — no detours to look at a street.

The car is for Tuscany, not for Florence

In the city a car is pure liability: nowhere to leave it, gates on every approach, and a centre small enough to walk across in twenty minutes. It earns its keep the moment you leave — Siena, San Gimignano, the Chianti roads south. Collect it from Villa Costanza, point it at the hills, and let Florence stay the walking city it has always been.
