Can your car enter Ferrara?
Today, 1 October, Ferrara’s winter rule switches back on. Until 31 March, on weekdays between 08:30 and 18:30, a diesel needs Euro 5 and a petrol car Euro 3 to drive in the built-up area, under the Emilia-Romagna anti-smog scheme that Arpae publishes for the whole plain. Evenings, weekends and the six warm months are free of it, but the old-town ZTL is not: that one is a permit rule and runs all year.

The winter scheme in brief
- Season: 1 October to 31 March; this season runs to 31 March 2027.
- Hours: Monday to Friday, 08:30 to 18:30, inside the built-up area.
- Barred: diesel up to and including Euro 4, petrol up to and including Euro 2.
- Extra days: on ecological Sundays and emergency-measure days, diesel up to and including Euro 5 is also stopped, 08:00 to 19:00.
- Always allowed: electric and hybrid vehicles, and cars carrying at least three people.
- Fine: Codice della Strada article 7, EUR 83 to 332.
A Euro 5 diesel hire car is therefore fine on a Tuesday but can be caught on an ecological Sunday. Rental desks can tell you the Euro class; it is also on the registration document.
Park outside the walls
The historic-centre ZTL is a separate, permit-based zone that ignores Euro class and runs in July as much as in January. Unless your hotel is inside and has registered your plate in advance, leave the car outside the Renaissance walls and walk or cycle in to the Castello Estense. The car is more useful for trips out to the Po Delta and the countryside.
Road rules
Italy’s urban limit is 50 km/h and the alcohol limit is 0.05%; drivers under 21 and those in their first three years of holding a licence must keep to zero.

Ferrara applies the Emilia-Romagna regional anti-smog scheme. From 1 October to 31 March, Monday to Friday between 08:30 and 18:30, diesel vehicles up to and including Euro 4 and petrol vehicles up to and including Euro 2 may not circulate in the built-up area.
