Erfurt’s most photographed sight is the Kramerbrucke, a medieval bridge so densely lined with inhabited shops and houses that most visitors don’t realise they are crossing water at all. The city ran a green-sticker Umweltzone for over a decade but abolished it in 2021, so no Umweltplakette, permit or low-emission fine applies to any car here now. Park near the cathedral hill, where Luther was once ordained, and explore Thuringia’s capital entirely on foot.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season

Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).

  • Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
  • Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
  • Studded tyres: banned
  • Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner

In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

The Krämerbrücke (Merchants' Bridge) is Erfurt's most famous sight, a medieval stone bridge spanning the river Gera that is completely built over with timber-framed houses and shops on both sides, so that crossing it feels like walking down a narrow medieval street rather than over a bridge. It's the longest inhabited bridge of its kind in Europe, lined with craft shops and cafes. It's in the heart of the walkable old town, best explored on foot.

Beyond the Krämerbrücke, Erfurt has the dramatic ensemble of the Cathedral of St Mary and the Church of St Severus rising together on a hill above a vast square (a famous Christmas market setting), the Augustinian monastery where Martin Luther lived as a monk, a well-preserved old town of merchant houses, and a synagogue that is among the oldest in Europe. It's a richly historic, walkable city, often overlooked by international visitors.
