Can your car enter Duisburg?
Duisburg’s Umweltzone is not a city-only rule: it is the Umweltzone Ruhrgebiet, one continuous zone shared with twelve neighbouring municipalities including Essen, Dortmund and Bochum since 1 January 2012. Every car needs the green Umweltplakette, foreign plates included, or the driver pays EUR 100. Once inside, head for the Landschaftspark, a former ironworks where visitors climb a blast furnace, then use the trams between sights.

Green sticker, Ruhr-wide
The green sticker admits diesel cars from Euro 4 (or Euro 3 with a retrofitted particulate filter) and petrol cars with a regulated catalytic converter. One sticker covers all 13 municipalities. There is no fixed national price, and German hire cars normally carry one. From 1 October 2026, a car with a German E-plate, or a foreign-registered electric car with the blue E badge, is exempt. Germany’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.05% alcohol, and zero for drivers under 21 or in their probationary period.
Park and ride
Park at a park-and-ride on the tram or S-Bahn and ride in; the Landschaftspark and the Innenhafen have their own parking.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
- Studded tyres: banned
- Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner
In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

A former ironworks turned into a public park, where the blast furnaces and ore bunkers are kept as they were. Visitors can climb a blast furnace for the view, divers train in a former gasometer, and the site is lit in colour at night. It has its own parking on the north side of the city.
The redeveloped Innenhafen with waterside restaurants and the Museum Küppersmühle for modern art in a former mill, the Lehmbruck Museum of sculpture, and harbour boat tours of Duisburg's inland port. The city is a stop on the Ruhr's Industrial Heritage Trail.
