Can your car enter Dortmund?
Dortmund, once powered by coal, steel and brewing and now known for Borussia Dortmund’s roaring Yellow Wall, has run a green-sticker Umweltzone since 2012 that covers the city around the clock. Any car without a green Umweltplakette risks a EUR 100 fine, foreign plates included. Park outside the zone and the rest of the reinvented Ruhr city is an easy walk or tram ride.

Sort the sticker before you arrive, then ride the U-Bahn
Dortmund sits inside the Ruhr’s shared Umweltzone, so the Umweltplakette (EUR 5-15, permanent, and already fitted to most German rentals) needs to be on the windscreen before you cross into the region — miss it and the fine is EUR 100. The city’s own open-data portal lists four Park + Ride sites for leaving the car and riding in: Schulte-Rödding, Hafen, Hauptfriedhof and Westfalenpark, each on the U-Bahn or S-Bahn network. As anywhere in Germany, the urban limit is 50 km/h and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.05%, zero for drivers under 21 or in their first two years.
Match days: leave the car
On Borussia Dortmund match days the stadium area and centre jam solid — the U-Bahn runs straight to the ground, so use it.
A car still earns its keep on the Heritage Trail
The car comes back into its own for the Ruhr’s Industrial Heritage Trail — Zeche Zollern’s art-nouveau machine hall, the Dortmunder U — best reached out of a park-and-ride rather than parked downtown.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).

Difficult — avoid it. On match days at the Signal Iduna Park (Westfalenstadion), one of Europe's largest football stadiums with its famous standing 'Yellow Wall', the area around the ground and the city centre fills with tens of thousands of fans, traffic is heavy and parking near the stadium is very limited. The U-Bahn and trains run directly to the stadium, so use public transport. If you're staying in the city, leave the car parked.
Use a central garage or a park-and-ride on the U-Bahn or S-Bahn and ride in. Dortmund and the wider Ruhr have a dense public-transport network. The compact centre is walkable, and the stadium and other attractions are reached by direct U-Bahn or train. Parking once and riding is the easy way around, and keeps you clear of the Umweltzone if you leave the car outside it.
Beyond football, Dortmund has reinvented its industrial heritage: the Zeche Zollern colliery with its art-nouveau machine hall, the Dortmunder U (a former brewery tower turned arts centre, a nod to the city's brewing fame), the Westfalenpark with its TV tower, and the German Football Museum. It's part of the Ruhr's Industrial Heritage Trail, with good rail links across the region.
Not for the city — the U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and a walkable centre cover it, and the whole Ruhr is densely connected by rail. A car helps for touring the Ruhr's Industrial Heritage Trail and the surrounding region, driven from a park-and-ride rather than used in the Umweltzone centre. Remember the green sticker is needed across the Ruhr zone, and avoid driving near the stadium on match days.
