Cologne’s Umweltzone is not a small ring around the Dom. Since its expansion on 1 October 2019 it covers 137 km², from the Militärring on the left bank to districts such as Mülheim, Kalk, Dellbrück and Rath/Heumar on the right. If you are driving into Cologne at all, assume you are entering it. The city’s answer for visitors is a network of 24 Park and Ride sites, free for a full day with any valid transit ticket.

The green sticker, and who no longer needs one
- Green Umweltplakette required throughout the zone, German and foreign plates alike; EUR 100 without it.
- Electric cars: from 1 October 2026, a car with a German E-plate or a foreign electric car carrying the blue E badge is exempt.
- German rental cars are registered locally and normally already carry a sticker; check the windscreen before you set off.
Park and Ride on the edge
- 24 P+R sites, among them Weiden West (685 spaces), Marsdorf/Haus Vorst (621) and Parkhaus Stadion (571).
- Free for up to 24 hours with a valid ticket of any kind: any VRS ticket or the Deutschlandticket, shown at the exit.
- Open 24 hours, except Sürth (entry and exit 06:00-22:00).

Bonn and Düsseldorf both run green-sticker zones of their own, so the same Plakette covers the Rhineland day trips.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).

No. The Dom stands beside the main station, and the Altstadt and Rhine promenade are a short walk away. A tram or S-Bahn from a P+R site gets you there without hunting for a central parking space.
