Chalon-sur-Saône, on the Saône in southern Burgundy, was the home of Nicéphore Niépce, who made the oldest surviving camera photograph at his family estate just south of the town in the 1820s. A museum on the quays now tells the story. The half-timbered old town gathers around the former Saint-Vincent cathedral and a river island. There is no low-emission zone, so any car may drive in.

Chalon-sur-Saône appears neither in the state register of French ZFEs nor in the national ZFE database, so no Crit’Air sticker is checked and no zone fine applies. The only registered zone in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is Dijon Métropole’s, and a blanket exemption currently lets every vehicle in there too. Park on the edge of the centre and walk to the Niépce museum, Saint-Vincent and the quays. France’s limits apply: 50 km/h in town unless signs say otherwise, and 0.05% alcohol (0.02% for probationary licence holders).
When the car helps
Keep it for the Burgundy wine country: the Côte Chalonnaise (Mercurey, Givry, Rully), the Côte de Beaune, the Mâconnais and the abbey of Cluny.

A compact old town of half-timbered houses around the former Saint-Vincent cathedral, the Saône quays and the Île Saint-Laurent, markets, and a carnival held each year before Lent. It is also a base for the Côte Chalonnaise vineyards.
Use a car park on the edge of the centre and walk. The old town around Saint-Vincent, the quays and the photography museum are all within a short walk of each other, and the car is more useful for the vineyards.
Not for the centre, which is walkable, and Chalon has a railway station. A car helps for the surrounding wine country: the Côte Chalonnaise villages (Mercurey, Givry, Rully), the Côte de Beaune to the north, the Mâconnais to the south and the abbey of Cluny.
