On the map, Castellón’s Zona de Bajas Emisiones is clear enough: 745,000 m² of the centre, bounded by the Ronda Centro. What the council has not published is a rule that stops a car at the edge of it. Its ZBE portal sets no DGT-label requirement, no Euro minimum, no hours and no fine; the measure it does describe is restricting traffic in the centre when the air-quality indices in current legislation are exceeded.

What changes the drive is the street works
The scheme sits inside the city’s sustainable urban mobility plan, and much of it is physical: central streets rebuilt as single-platform surfaces with pedestrian priority, with new lighting, signage and greenery. Those streets do more to keep through traffic out than any label check. Park on or near the Ronda and walk in.
If a restriction is ever switched on, for example during a pollution episode, Spain’s traffic law treats ignoring it as a serious offence with a EUR 200 fine. Spain’s general rules: 50 km/h only on urban streets with two or more lanes each way (30 or 20 on smaller streets) and 0.5 g/l alcohol.
