Campobasso’s upper town is a Zona a Traffico Limitato run on permits: the cameras ask whether your plate is authorised, never what Euro class the engine meets. Without authorisation, a day inside costs EUR 83 to 332, and since December 2024 repeat entries on the same day count once. The hill is topped by the Monforte Castle, named after the 15th-century count Nicola Monforte, and the walk up to it is the way to see the place.

Two towns, one hill
Campobasso is really two places. Below the castle the old town falls away in narrow, sloping streets and stairways; in the valley, the Murattiana quarter laid out under Joachim Murat’s rule in the 19th century holds the public buildings, shops and wide squares. Park in the lower town and climb on foot, and treat the sign over each ZTL gate as the timetable, because the comune does not publish a single one. Italy’s general limits apply on the way in: 50 km/h in built-up areas and 0.5 g/l alcohol, with zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years of licence.
When the car helps
Molise beyond the city is where the car pays off. The best-known stop is Saepinum, the Roman town at Altilia, maintained by the Ministry of Culture as an archaeological area.

Entry to the historic centre depends on a permit or an authorised plate, not on your car's Euro class. Cameras at the gates read plates, and an unauthorised entry is fined under article 7 of the Codice della Strada at EUR 83 to 332.
One per zone per day. Since 14 December 2024, repeat camera entries into the same ZTL on the same day count as a single violation under article 198 of the Codice della Strada.
The comune publishes no single timetable for the whole zone, so the panel above each gate is the rule that counts. Read it before you cross.
The castle crowning the hill above the city, named after Nicola Monforte, the 15th-century mercenary captain who held Campobasso as count when a severe mid-century earthquake struck and who began its rebuilding.
Not for the upper town, which is best walked. A car is useful for Molise beyond the city, for example the Roman town of Saepinum at Altilia, run as a state archaeological site.
