Yes, you can drive to Cagliari and park within a few minutes’ walk of the old town; the trick is to stop at the foot of Castello rather than trying to drive up into it. The comune’s tourism office lists a paid car park on Viale Regina Elena in the area directly below the Bastione di Saint Remy, and another on Via Cammino Nuovo at the top of Via Santa Margherita, on the Stampace side of the hill. Leave the car at either and climb into Castello on foot.

The port and station car parks are the natural choice if you are combining the city with a ferry or train, and Santa Gilla suits a long stay because the hourly rate is low and it never closes.
Six ZTL areas, each on its own clock
Cagliari has six limited-traffic areas: Castello, Marina, Villanova, Stampace alto, Stampace basso and Poetto. They do not share one timetable; each runs its own hours, much of it overnight rather than during the working day, so the gate sign in front of you is what counts. Passes are handled by the comune’s ZTL office. Anyone with an Italian digital identity (SPID or CIE) gets one immediately through the online platform; everyone else applies by email or at the protocol office on Via Crispi and waits roughly 15 to 30 days. A visitor driving a hire car will normally just stay outside the gates.
Coming off the ferry or the plane
The passenger terminal is on Via Roma, right in the city, with daily ferries to and from Civitavecchia, Naples and Palermo. About three minutes’ walk away, Piazza Matteotti brings together the railway station, the ARST regional bus station and several city bus stops, which makes the port-side car park a practical base.
Cagliari-Elmas airport has its own car hire desks, and trains heading into Cagliari’s main station stop at the airport station a few minutes before arriving, so you can also collect a car later, in the city centre, once you have seen the old town on foot.
Poetto, the lagoon and the rest of Sardinia
