Béziers does not run a low-emission zone. The government’s list of ZFEs in force names only Montpellier, Nîmes and Toulouse for the whole of Occitanie, and the national ZFE database holds no Béziers zone, so there is no Crit’Air requirement and no zone fine in town. The sticker still matters if your route continues to Montpellier, a short run up the A9: for a foreign car it costs EUR 5.11 with postage. When the car helps
Keep it for the Languedoc wine country, the beaches, the Canal du Midi villages, and Narbonne and Pézenas. If you head into Montpellier, carry the Crit’Air sticker.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

The Canal du Midi, the 17th-century waterway built by Pierre-Paul Riquet and a UNESCO World Heritage site, passes Béziers. Its highlights here are the Fonseranes locks, a staircase of locks that lifts boats up the hillside, and the canal bridge carrying the waterway over the river Orb. Both sit just outside the historic centre, with towpaths for walking and cycling.
The fortress-like Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire stands high above the river Orb and is visible for miles. The city has Roman roots and is remembered for the massacre of 1209 during the Albigensian Crusade. Today it is a lively southern town known for rugby, its summer feria and wine, and the old town is best explored on foot.
Use a car park near the centre, then walk to the cathedral, the old streets and the Allées Paul Riquet. The Fonseranes locks have their own parking on the edge of town.
Not for the compact centre, and Béziers is on the main rail line. A car helps for the Languedoc around it: the Hérault vineyards, the beaches at Valras, the Canal du Midi villages, and Narbonne and Pézenas.
