Besançon’s old town sits inside a tight bend of the river Doubs, with Vauban’s 17th-century citadel on the hill above it, and there is no low-emission zone to plan around. France’s national register lists 25 ZFEs in force and Besançon is not one of them, so no Crit’Air sticker is checked and no emission fine applies. Older claims of a 2025 zone with EUR 68 fines were wrong.

Park and walk the river loop
Park in a garage or at a tram park-and-ride, then walk or take the tram into the old town and climb to the citadel for the views. France’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.05% alcohol, and 0.02% for probationary drivers.
When the car helps
Keep it for the Jura: the wine country, the gorges and waterfalls, the road toward Switzerland. If you head on to Dijon, that city does run a ZFE, so order the Crit’Air sticker in advance.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.
In French the rule is pneus hiver, and snow chains are chaînes à neige — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

No. The government's register lists the 25 low-emission zones in force in France, and Besançon is not one of them, so no Crit'Air class is checked anywhere in the city. You still need the sticker for listed zones such as Lyon, Grenoble or Strasbourg.
Dijon Métropole, the only ZFE in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, about 100 km north-west on the A39. If your route runs through Dijon, order the Crit'Air sticker before you travel: EUR 5.11 for a foreign-registered car on the official site.
A 17th-century fortress by Vauban, Louis XIV's military engineer, on the hill inside the loop of the Doubs. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Fortifications of Vauban and now houses museums, with views over the old town.
Besides the citadel and its river-loop setting, Besançon is the birthplace of Victor Hugo and of the Lumière brothers, and a long-standing centre of French watchmaking, remembered in its Musée du Temps.
Not for the city: the old town is compact and walkable, with a tram, and Besançon has TGV services. A car helps for the Jura, its gorges, waterfalls and wine country, and the road toward Switzerland.
