Can your car enter Bergamo?
Bergamo stacks two towns: the modern Città Bassa below and the Venetian-walled Città Alta on the hill. Two different rules can stop a car here. The ZTL Città Alta e Colli is a permit gate: since 21 June 2026 it runs 10:00-24:00 continuously on Sundays and public holidays, plus 21:00-01:00 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays while summer time lasts. The regional diesel rule
Separately, Bergamo is a Fascia 1 comune under Lombardy’s permanent air-quality measures. On weekdays 07:30-19:30, all year except mid-week holidays, Euro 0 and Euro 1 vehicles of every fuel and diesel up to Euro 4 may not be driven, so a diesel needs Euro 5. The Euro 5 diesel ban planned for 1 October 2026 has been postponed to 1 October 2027 by regional decision 6846 of 28 September 2026. A breach costs EUR 75-450.
Park low, ride the funicular up
Leave the car in a lower-town garage and take the funicular up through the walls; a second line continues to San Vigilio for the views. ATB runs both, and its tickets cover buses, trams and funiculars. Since 14 December 2024, repeat entries into the same ZTL on one day count as one violation. Italy’s rules: 50 km/h in towns, 0.5 g/l alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 and in their first three years.
A base for the lakes
Bergamo has its own airport and sits near Lake Iseo and Lake Como. Keep the car for the lakes and valleys.

Take the funicular from the lower town up to Città Alta; a second funicular continues to San Vigilio. ATB, the city transport company, runs both, and the same tickets cover buses, trams and funiculars.
In the Città Bassa, the lower town, then ride the funicular. Parking in the walled upper town is scarce and the ZTL gate makes driving up pointless on Sundays and summer evenings.
Not for the town: the funicular and walking cover both levels. A car helps for Lake Iseo, Lake Como and the Bergamo valleys, driven out from a lower-town car park. On weekdays, check the diesel rule first.
