Bayreuth does not appear anywhere in the Umweltbundesamt’s federal register of Germany’s 58 low-emission zones, so no Umweltplakette and no emission fine apply. Park in the centre and walk to the Margravial Opera House, the baroque court theatre that UNESCO listed in 2012, or head up to Wagner’s Festspielhaus, home of the summer festival.

Is There a Low Emission Zone in Bayreuth?

No. Bayreuth has never had an Umweltzone. The Umweltbundesamt’s federal register lists every German low-emission zone ever created, 35 active and 23 withdrawn, and Bayreuth is not among them. No Umweltplakette is required and no low-emission penalty applies.

Park, walk to the opera houses

The Margravial Opera House was built between 1745 and 1750 for Margravine Wilhelmine, to designs by Giuseppe Galli Bibiena, and is the only entirely preserved court opera house of its type. The Bayreuth Festival fills the town each summer, so book parking and rooms early. Germany’s limits: 50 km/h in towns, 0.5 per mille alcohol, zero for drivers under 21 and during the two-year probation.

When the car helps

Keep it for Franconian Switzerland, with its rocks, caves and castles, and the wider Franconia.

Winter tyres in Germany — 2026–27 season

Winter tyres are required in Germany whenever conditions are wintry — Situational (when conditions require: ice, snow, slush, black ice).

  • Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Germany sets no separate winter figure.
  • Accepted marking: 3PMSF only — the M+S transitional rule no longer applies to cars (StVZO §36(4))
  • Studded tyres: banned
  • Penalty: EUR 60 + 1 point; EUR 80 if you obstruct traffic; EUR 75 for the vehicle owner

In German the rule is Winterreifenpflicht, and snow chains are Schneeketten — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

In a central car park, then walk to the Margravial Opera House and the old town. No emission sticker is needed anywhere in Bayreuth. During the summer festival, allow extra time for parking near the Festspielhaus.
