Quick Answer

Bath's Clean Air Zone never charges cars or motorbikes, whatever they emit. It is a Class C zone for older vans, taxis, lorries, buses and coaches. Parking is the real hurdle.

Bath’s compact Georgian core, built in golden stone around the Roman Baths and the Circus, was never designed for cars, and the obstacle here is parking rather than any city charge. The Clean Air Zone that has run since March 2021 is Class C, so it bills older vans, taxis, lorries, buses and coaches and leaves every private car and motorbike alone. Spaces near the centre are scarce and expensive: leave the car at a park-and-ride on the edge of town and ride in.

This page covers driving around Bath. For the charges and boundary, see the Bath CAZ details.

The CAZ skips cars, parking is the real problem

Drivers of non-compliant vans, minibuses and taxis pay GBP 9 a day and HGVs, buses and coaches GBP 100; cars pay nothing. Use one of three park-and-ride sites, Lansdown, Newbridge or Odd Down, and bus in. Drive on the left. The urban limit is 30 mph (48 km/h) unless signed lower, and England’s drink-drive limit is 80 mg per 100 ml of blood.

Walk the Roman and Georgian centre

The Roman Baths, the Abbey, the Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge are all a short walk apart in the UNESCO centre.

When the car helps

Keep it for the Cotswolds, Stonehenge, Wells and Cheddar Gorge, driven from a park-and-ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. The council states that cars and motorbikes are not charged in Bath's CAZ regardless of their emissions. It is a Class C zone, in force since 15 March 2021 and running every day: non-compliant vans, minibuses, taxis and private hire vehicles pay GBP 9 a day, and HGVs, buses and coaches GBP 100. An unpaid charge becomes a GBP 120 penalty, GBP 60 if paid within 14 days.

Check emission zone requirements

Use one of Bath's three park-and-ride sites, Lansdown to the north, Newbridge to the west and Odd Down to the south, and take the bus into the centre. Central parking is limited and expensive, and the Roman Baths, the Abbey, the Royal Crescent and the Circus are all within walking distance of the bus stops.

Plan your trip costs including parking

On the left, as throughout the UK, with roundabouts taken clockwise. Rental cars are right-hand drive. Bath's historic streets are narrow and steep, another reason many visitors leave the car at a park-and-ride.

Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage city built around the Roman Baths and their natural hot springs, and famous for honey-coloured Georgian architecture: the Royal Crescent, the Circus, Pulteney Bridge over the weir and the Abbey. It is compact, with Jane Austen connections and a thermal spa you can still bathe in.

Not for the city, which is walkable, served by park-and-ride and on the train line from London and Bristol. A car helps for the Cotswolds, Stonehenge, the Mendip Hills, Wells and Cheddar Gorge.
