It's Bassano's beloved covered wooden bridge over the river Brenta, designed in its current form by the great architect Andrea Palladio in the 16th century, with a distinctive timber roof. Repeatedly destroyed by floods and war and always rebuilt, it became a symbol of the Alpini (Italy's mountain troops) after the First World War, hence its name. Crossing the wooden bridge, with the grappa distilleries and bars at its ends, is the heart of a visit, on foot from the old town.

Bassano del Grappa is one of the most famous homes of grappa, the Italian grape-based spirit, with historic distilleries (the Nardini distillery by the bridge dates to 1779) where you can taste and buy. The town's name actually comes from nearby Monte Grappa rather than the drink, but the association is strong. Tasting grappa at the bars by the famous bridge is a classic Bassano experience, all within the walkable centre.

Use a car park outside the ZTL, then walk into the centre. There are lots around the edge of the old town. The compact historic centre, the arcaded squares and the famous bridge are walkable. Parking outside the restricted zone and walking is the simplest approach, keeping the car for the surrounding Veneto and the mountains.
