Use a park-and-ride or a central garage and use the excellent tram network — some Basel trams cross into France and Germany. Parking in the centre is limited and pricey, as in most Swiss cities, while the trams and buses are punctual and comprehensive. Parking and riding is the easy way to reach the old town, the Rhine and the city's many art museums.
Basel is Switzerland's cultural capital — home to Art Basel, the Kunstmuseum and around forty museums, a beautifully preserved medieval old town around the red sandstone Münster, and the Rhine, where locals famously swim downstream in summer. It's compact and walkable, with the art, the old town and the river close together, all easily reached on foot or by tram once you've parked.
