The real restriction in central Athens isn’t an emission sticker: it’s the daktylios, a plate-parity ring that, in season, lets cars in on alternating dates depending on whether the plate’s last digit is odd or even. It is switched on for a season each autumn, and right now it is off: the 2025-26 season ended on 24 July 2026 and no restart date has been published. Since 1 January 2026 Greece’s default urban speed limit has also dropped to 30 km/h under Law 5209/2025. Park at a metro station on the edge and ride in; the Acropolis and Plaka are walkable from there.

How the ring works when it is on
In season, the rule applies Monday to Thursday 07:00-20:00 and Friday 07:00-15:00, never at weekends or on public holidays. Taxis are exempt, and electric, hybrid, CNG/LPG and low-CO2 Euro 6 cars are too once their owner holds a permit issued through gov.gr. Anyone else on the wrong date pays EUR 150, the figure the 2025 Highway Code set in place of EUR 100. A hire car’s plate decides your days, so check it when you collect the car.
Park on the edge, ride the metro
The Athens metro links the airport, Piraeus and the main sites. Greece’s limits: 30 km/h in town by default, 0.05% alcohol.
When the car helps
Keep it for Attica and the mainland: Cape Sounion, Delphi, the Peloponnese. Island ferries leave from Piraeus by metro.
Greece cut the default built-up-area limit to 30 km/h on 1 January 2026. 50 km/h now applies only on one-way roads with at least two lanes, two-way roads with at least two lanes per direction, or roads with a central median, unless a sign says otherwise.
