Grand Annecy’s ZFE-m operates 24/7, all year round, yet in practice it only turns away Crit’Air-unclassified vehicles registered before 1997, with a EUR 68 fine for a car and EUR 135 for something heavier. Tighter thresholds are scheduled for 2028, 2029 and 2030, so a modern rental has nothing to worry about yet beyond the sticker itself. Park in a garage near the canals and walk the pastel old town and the islet-set Palais de l’Île, then ride the lakeside voie verte.

The sticker is the only paperwork
Grand Annecy asks every vehicle in the zone to display a Crit’Air vignette, whatever its age. Order it from certificat-air.gouv.fr well before the trip (EUR 5.11 for a foreign-registered car, postage included). In 2026 the only cars shut out are unclassified ones from before 1997; Crit’Air 5 joins them on 1 January 2028, Crit’Air 4 in 2029 and Crit’Air 3 in 2030. France’s limits: 50 km/h in town and 0.05% alcohol.
Park and walk (or cycle)
Park in a garage near the centre or the lake; summer spaces go early. The old town is pedestrian, and the lakeside voie verte runs along the shore with mountain views. Rent a bike and ride it.
When the car helps
Keep it for the surrounding Alps: the villages, the ski resorts and the road towards Chamonix and Mont Blanc, driven from a central garage.

Winter tyres in France — 2026–27 season
Winter tyres are required in France whenever conditions are wintry — 1 Nov - 31 Mar (mountain law, designated departments).
- Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — France sets no separate winter figure.
- Accepted marking: 3PMSF on all four tyres, or snow chains / snow socks carried for two drive wheels; M+S alone no longer accepted (34 departments, signed communes only)
- Studded tyres: restricted
- Penalty: No sanction in force as of 17 Feb 2026 (penalty decree not yet published). Ignoring a B26 chain sign: 2nd-class fine, up to EUR 150. The obligation is enforceable only where B58/B59 signs are installed.

Because the Thiou canal and its branches wind through the old town, lined with pastel houses, flower-decked bridges and the Palais de l'Île, a 12th-century building on an islet in the canal. With the mountains behind and the lake beside it, the old town is explored on foot, drifting between canals and squares.
Use an underground garage near the centre or the lake, then walk. Spaces near the old town and the lakefront go quickly in summer, so arrive early in the day. The pedestrian old town and the lakeside are compact enough that you will not need the car again until you leave.
Lake Annecy is ringed by a voie verte, a cycle path along the former railway with mountain views, ideal for riding or walking. Summer brings swimming, paddleboarding and boat trips; the mountains around offer hiking and, in winter, skiing. Renting a bike for the lakeside path needs no car at all.
Not for the town, where the pedestrian old town, the lakefront and the cycle path cover everything. A car helps for the surrounding Alps, the mountain villages, the ski resorts and the road towards Chamonix and Mont Blanc, driven out from a central garage.
