Amalfi by Car in 2026: Plate Days on the SS163 Coast Road
Amalfi, Italy · ZTL
On announced dates the SS163 runs alternate plates 10:00-18:00: odd dates bar odd-ending plates. Amalfi's centre is a permit ZTL (EUR 83-332). Ferries or SITA buses skip both.
Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Amalfi (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Amalfi’s coast road, the SS163 Amalfitana, comes with its own calendar. On dates the comune announces, an alternate-plate scheme runs between 10:00 and 18:00: on odd-numbered dates cars whose plate ends in an odd digit may not use the road, and on even dates even-ending plates are barred. In 2026 it applied from 30 March to 6 April and from 24 April to 2 May. The town centre adds a permit ZTL, and parking is scarce.

Ferry or bus first
Seasonal ferries link Amalfi with Salerno, Positano, Sorrento and Capri, and SITA Sud buses run along the coast road. Either way you skip the parking hunt and the plate calendar.
If you drive
Check the comune’s notices for plate dates before you set off. Two-wheelers are not covered; residents of the 14 Costa d’Amalfi comuni, disabled-badge holders, taxis and hotel guests with a confirmed booking (for the arrival and departure journeys only) are exempt. Entering the ZTL without a permit costs EUR 83-332, or EUR 58.10 if the minimum is paid within five days, and repeat entries into the same zone on the same day count as one violation since 14 December 2024. Italy’s general rules: 50 km/h in towns, 0.05% alcohol, zero for drivers in their first three years.
When the car helps
Mainly for remote inland stays. Many visitors leave the car in Salerno or Sorrento and travel the coast by boat and bus.
