Algeciras is where Spain’s roads meet the ferries to Africa, with crossings of the Strait of Gibraltar to Tanger Med and to Ceuta. Its low emission zone has never started: nothing is signposted, checked or fined, so a visitor’s car needs no label to drive into town. Head for the port’s own signed access if you are crossing, and park in a central garage if you are not; the walkable core faces the Rock of Gibraltar across the bay.

A zone owed, not a zone enforced
Spain’s 2021 climate law required towns of more than 50,000 people to create low emission zones before 2023. Algeciras qualifies, but in 2026 its zone is still dormant, and no penalty can be issued. Spain’s urban limit is 50 km/h; the alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l in the blood, 0.3 g/l for novice drivers.
The ferry is the main event
For Tanger Med and Ceuta, follow the port signs with your booking and passport. Summer brings the Operacion Paso del Estrecho, when traffic to North Africa peaks, so allow extra time at check-in.
When the car helps
Keep it for Tarifa and the Costa de la Luz, the white villages and the Los Alcornocales park, or the road on to Gibraltar and Cadiz.

In a garage near the centre, then walk; the market and the seafront are close together. If you are taking the car across, drive straight to the port, which has its own access roads separate from the town streets.
Gibraltar and its Rock across the bay; Tarifa, at the southern tip of mainland Europe, with its beaches and windsurfing; the Los Alcornocales cork-oak natural park; the white villages inland; and the Costa de la Luz towards Cadiz.
