Quick Answer

Alberobello's two trulli quarters, plus Piazza Sacramento and Largo Martellotta, are closed to cars without a pass. Gate signs give the times; unauthorised entry costs EUR 83-332.

Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Alberobello (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Next

Alberobello’s fame rests on its trulli: whitewashed, conical dry-stone houses packed across two hillside quarters, unlike anything else in Italy. The Comune closes Rione Monti, Rione Aia Piccola, Piazza Sacramento and Largo Martellotta to cars without a pass, and the sign at each gate carries the times. Driving in without one costs EUR 83 to EUR 332 under the Codice della Strada, or EUR 58.10 if the minimum is paid within five days. Leave the car at the edge of town and walk in.

Park outside, walk the cone-roofed lanes

The trulli lanes are for walking. Park at the edge and head into Rione Monti and Aia Piccola on foot. Deliveries to Largo Martellotta are allowed only from 01:00 to 11:00 (10:00 in August), which tells you how little room there is for cars in the middle of town. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 0.05% alcohol, and zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years with a licence.

When the car helps

Keep it for the Itria Valley: the white towns of Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Cisternino, and the cave town of Matera across the Basilicata border, driven from a car park outside the trulli zone.

Winter tyres in Italy — 2026–27 season

Winter tyres are required in Italy whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (varies by region and road).

  • Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Italy sets no separate winter figure.
  • Accepted marking: M+S / MS / M-S / M&S (3PMSF not required)
  • Studded tyres: restricted
  • Penalty: €87–345 outside built-up areas, from €42 inside, plus an order not to continue

In Italian the rule is pneumatici invernali, and snow chains are catene da neve — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rione Monti, Rione Aia Piccola, Piazza Sacramento and Largo Martellotta are closed to cars without a pass; the Comune does not publish ZTL times, so the sign at each gate is what counts. Driving in without authorisation costs EUR 83-332 under the Codice della Strada. The trulli quarters are best explored on foot anyway. Park in a car park on the edge of the town and walk into the Rione Monti and Aia Piccola districts to wander among the cone-roofed houses.

Check emission zone requirements

Trulli are traditional Puglian dry-stone houses with distinctive conical roofs built without mortar, often topped with decorative pinnacles and painted symbols, found in the Itria Valley and concentrated most famously in Alberobello, where hundreds of them crowd two hillside quarters. Many are now shops, holiday homes and even a church (the trullo church of Sant'Antonio). Their unique appearance, found nowhere else, is why the town is a UNESCO site and a major draw.

Use a car park on the edge of the town, then walk into the trulli districts. There are paid car parks within easy reach of the Rione Monti (the largest trulli quarter, now full of shops) and the Aia Piccola (a quieter, more residential trulli quarter). The lanes themselves are narrow and pedestrian, so leaving the car at the edge and walking is the only practical way to see the town.

Plan your trip costs including parking

It's the most famous stop in the Itria Valley, a region of trulli, whitewashed hill towns and olive groves in central Puglia. Nearby are the beautiful white towns of Locorotondo, Martina Franca and Cisternino, the cave town of Matera not too far off, and the baroque city of Lecce further south. A car is genuinely useful for touring these, parked outside the trulli zone when in Alberobello itself.

Not for the town itself — park on the edge and walk the trulli lanes. But a car is genuinely useful for exploring the Itria Valley and Puglia around it — the white towns, the coast, the olive country and the caves of Matera — since public transport between these is limited. Drive between them, parking outside each historic centre and walking in.
