The old town, Vieil Aix, is a maze of narrow streets and squares around the Cours Mirabeau, much of it pedestrian, so driving in is impractical. Central garages put you within a short walk of the fountains, markets and cafes that define the town.
Aix is famous for its fountains (the town's nickname is the 'city of a thousand fountains'), the grand Cours Mirabeau lined with plane trees and cafes, its lively daily markets, and its association with the painter Paul Cézanne, who was born here — you can visit his studio and the nearby Montagne Sainte-Victoire he painted obsessively. The elegant, golden old town is best explored slowly on foot.

A car is genuinely useful for exploring these, parked in a central garage when you're in town. Aix is also close to Marseille and on the TGV line, with its own out-of-town high-speed station.
