Quick Answer

Acireale closes seven central streets to unauthorised cars 24 hours a day and others on Saturday evenings and holidays. Entry needs a permit; the fine is EUR 83-332.

Locally the zone is called Zona a Traffico Limitato Acireale (Italy) — that is the wording on the boundary signs, on the official portal and on any penalty notice, so it is the phrase to search for once you are there.

Acireale’s ZTL is a permit-based restriction, not an emission rule, and it runs on three timetables rather than one. Seven central streets around Piazza Duomo, including Via Ruggero Settimo and Via Cavour, are closed at all hours. Via Romeo, Via Petralia and Via Lancaster shut on Saturdays from 17:00 to 01:00 and all day on public holidays, while Corso Umberto I, Piazza Garibaldi and Largo Giovanni XXIII close on Saturday nights from 20:00 and from 17:00 on holidays. Entering without authorisation costs EUR 83 to EUR 332. The Comune republishes the timetable when the clocks change, so check its ZTL page before a winter visit.

Park outside, walk the baroque centre

Park outside the restricted streets and walk to the cathedral and the ornate churches. Italy’s limits: 50 km/h urban, 0.05% alcohol (zero for drivers under 21 or in their first three years).

When the car helps

Keep it for the lava-rock Riviera dei Ciclopi (Aci Trezza, Aci Castello), the slopes and wineries of Etna, and the road to Catania and Taormina, driven from a car park outside the ZTL.

Winter tyres in Italy — 2026–27 season

Winter tyres are required in Italy whenever conditions are wintry — 15 Nov - 15 Apr (varies by region and road).

  • Tread minimum: 1.6 mm — Italy sets no separate winter figure.
  • Accepted marking: M+S / MS / M-S / M&S (3PMSF not required)
  • Studded tyres: restricted
  • Penalty: €87–345 outside built-up areas, from €42 inside, plus an order not to continue

In Italian the rule is pneumatici invernali, and snow chains are catene da neve — that is the wording on signs, in hire-car paperwork and on any penalty notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Acireale's ZTL has three regimes: Piazza Duomo, Via Ruggero Settimo, Vico degli Studi, Via Davì, Via Cavour, Via Santo Stefano and Via Topazio are closed around the clock; Via Romeo, Via Petralia and Via Lancaster close on Saturdays from 17:00 to 01:00 and all day on holidays; Corso Umberto I and Piazza Garibaldi close on Saturdays from 20:00 to 01:00 and from 17:00 on holidays. Unauthorised entry costs EUR 83-332, with no licence points. Hotels inside can sometimes register your plate. For most visitors, parking outside the zone and walking is simplest — the compact baroque centre, with its cathedral, its richly decorated churches and the main piazza, is best explored on foot.

Check emission zone requirements

Acireale hosts what is widely considered the most beautiful carnival in Sicily, a long tradition of spectacular parades featuring enormous allegorical papier-mâché floats and dazzling displays of flowers, filling the baroque streets and squares with colour and crowds over the carnival period (February-March). During the carnival the town is packed and at its most festive, so plan accordingly. The rest of the year it's an elegant, atmospheric baroque town.

Use a car park outside the ZTL, then walk into the baroque centre. There are lots around the edge of the historic core. The compact centre around the cathedral and the main piazza is walkable. Parking outside the restricted zone and walking is the simplest approach, keeping the car for the coast and the slopes of Etna.

Plan your trip costs including parking

Acireale sits on the Riviera dei Ciclopi, a dramatic stretch of the Ionian coast of black lava rock, with the picturesque fishing village of Aci Trezza and its offshore basalt stacks (the legendary rocks hurled by the Cyclops Polyphemus at Odysseus) and the harbour of Aci Castello with its lava-stone castle nearby. Above rises Mount Etna, with its slopes, wineries and the volcano itself. A car is useful for these, parked outside the ZTL when in the town.

Not for the compact baroque centre, which is walkable. A car is genuinely useful for the surroundings — the lava-rock coast of the Riviera dei Ciclopi (Aci Trezza, Aci Castello), the slopes and wineries of Mount Etna, and the road toward Catania and Taormina — driven from a car park outside the ZTL centre.
