Aberdeen’s Low Emission Zone works differently from England’s clean air zones: it sells no daily pass. A car below Euro 4 petrol or Euro 6 diesel simply should not enter the centre, and cameras issue a GBP 60 penalty (GBP 30 if paid within 14 days) that doubles for each repeat within 90 days. The ‘Granite City’, built of silver-grey stone and long the hub of North Sea oil, has a compact centre and a long beach. Park outside the zone if your car falls short, and remember you are driving on the left.

No pass to buy, and left-hand driving
The zone runs 24/7. Penalties climb from GBP 60 to GBP 120 and GBP 240, capped at GBP 480 for cars and vans; motorbikes and mopeds are outside the scheme. Drive on the left, roundabouts clockwise. In built-up areas the default UK limit is 30 mph (48 km/h) unless signs say otherwise, and Scotland’s drink-drive limit is 50 mg per 100 ml of blood. Park-and-ride sites on the city edge keep a non-compliant car out of the centre.
When the car helps
Keep it for Royal Deeside and its castles (Balmoral), the Cairngorms, the Speyside whisky distilleries and the coast, driven out from a park-and-ride.
