Can your car enter Aarhus?
Aarhus’s miljøzone runs 24/7, all year, and it only tests diesel: cars, vans and minibuses need Euro 5 or a fitted particle filter, while petrol cars face no emission test at all. Enforcement is by number-plate camera, so there is no sticker to buy. A non-compliant car or van costs DKK 1,500 (about EUR 200); lorries and buses DKK 12,500.

Older foreign diesels: register first
A foreign-registered diesel must be registered online at miljoezoner.dk by the day it enters a zone if it was first registered before 1 January 2011 (car or minibus), 1 September 2016 (van) or 1 January 2015 (lorry or bus). Registration is free and lasts five years. Sending proof of compliance within 80 days of a notice reduces the car fine to DKK 1,000.

Park, then walk or cycle
Aarhus is built for bikes. Leave the car in a central garage; ARoS with its rainbow rooftop walkway, the cathedral, the Latin Quarter, Den Gamle By and the waterfront are all close. Denmark’s rules: 0.5 g/l alcohol, 0.2 g/l in the first three years after passing the test, 50 km/h in towns, and strong priority for cyclists, so check the cycle lane before every turn.
When the car helps
Keep it for Jutland: the coast and the Mols Bjerge hills.
