Stuttgart’s layered bans are a diesel problem, not a petrol one
Few German cities have piled on as many diesel-specific restrictions as Stuttgart: a city-wide Diesel-Verkehrsverbot has excluded diesel Euro 4 and older since January 2019, and a second, narrower ban has excluded Euro 5 diesel from the “small environmental zone” — the central basin plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen — since July 2020. Stack the two together and the effective diesel floor is Euro 5 city-wide, Euro 6 inside the small zone. None of this touches petrol engines. For petrol, Stuttgart applies the ordinary green-sticker rule, with a practical floor of roughly Euro 1 (a regulated catalytic converter) — and this 2014 Euro 6 car clears that with five classes to spare.
The sticker is still the only paperwork that matters
Being well clear of the petrol floor doesn’t remove the display requirement — the green Umweltplakette has to be visible on every vehicle in the zone. It’s a one-time purchase from umwelt-plakette.de for EUR 5-15, valid for the life of the car’s current engine.
What’s actually enforced, and how
Entering without the sticker risks a flat EUR 100 fine, checked through police spot checks combined with continuous camera monitoring. As with Munich’s rules, the fine attaches to the missing Umweltplakette itself — a petrol Euro 6 car doesn’t get a pass on the sticker requirement just because it’s nowhere near the diesel restrictions.
Where the diesel rules would matter instead
If the same trip also involves a diesel vehicle, the two Stuttgart bans are worth mapping against the exact route: the citywide Euro 5 floor applies everywhere in the Umweltzone, while the stricter Euro 6 floor only bites inside the small environmental zone’s specific districts. A diesel that clears the citywide rule can still be turned away from central Stuttgart specifically.
Exemptions outside the sticker system
Electric and hydrogen vehicles, historic H-plate cars, emergency vehicles and military vehicles bypass the Umweltplakette requirement entirely — not relevant here, since this petrol car already qualifies on the standard rule.
