Stuttgart 2026: A 2018 Petrol Euro 5 Needs Only a Sticker
Stuttgart stacks a diesel ban on top of its green-sticker Umweltzone, and none of it applies to petrol. A 2018 petrol Euro 5 qualifies for the Umweltplakette (EUR 5-15) without difficulty. Entering without the sticker displayed risks a EUR 100 fine.

Can a petrol Euro 5 car enter Stuttgart?
Yes, comfortably. The restrictions Stuttgart is known for are diesel restrictions: a city-wide Diesel-Verkehrsverbot since 1 January 2019 barring diesel Euro 4 and worse, and a tighter rule in the kleine Umweltzone since 1 July 2020 barring diesel Euro 5 and worse. Petrol is outside both.
What remains for a petrol car is the original Umweltzone rule, which requires a regulated catalytic converter - effectively Euro 1 and up. A Euro 5 petrol engine is four classes past that.
First, check the Euro class itself
A 2018 petrol car described as Euro 5 is worth a second look. Euro 6 became mandatory for new petrol registrations in September 2015, so the pairing is unusual. Read field V.9 on the Certificate of Conformity or the registration document and note the answer.
In Stuttgart it changes nothing - Euro 1 is the floor either way. It changes a great deal in cities whose petrol threshold sits higher, so it is worth knowing before the rest of the trip.
What to arrange before driving in
- Buy the green Umweltplakette - EUR 5-15 from umwelt-plakette.de, a TUV station or a garage. One purchase, no renewal.
- Display it before entering. Enforcement is police spot checks plus camera monitoring, around the clock.
- Ignore the diesel rules. The city-wide ban and the inner-district ban both apply to diesel only.
What entering unstickered costs
A flat EUR 100. The penalty is for the missing document, not for emissions, which is the frustrating part: this car meets the underlying standard by a wide margin, and forgetting the sticker is the only realistic way to be fined here.
Why diesel has it so much harder
A diesel car needs Euro 5 to enter Stuttgart at all and Euro 6 to enter the Talkessel, Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach or Zuffenhausen - on top of the same green sticker. That is why a Euro 5 petrol car and a Euro 5 diesel car face completely different answers in the same city.
