Rome 2026: Petrol Euro 5 (2018) Clears Fascia Verde Easily
A 2018 Euro 5 petrol car is far newer than the classes Rome’s outer Fascia Verde ring restricts, so it clears that ring without issue. The real risk is the separate historic-centre ZTL: during gate hours even a compliant car needs authorisation, and each unauthorised camera pass fines EUR 83-332.
Can your car enter Rome?
Enter your vehicle's fuel + Euro class → instant verdict for Rome (ZTL). Fine if wrong: EUR 83-332 (Italian Traffic Code art. 7(14)) per unauthorised entry — and each camera you pass can be charged separately..
Can a petrol Euro 5 car enter Rome?
Yes for the Fascia Verde — but that’s only half of Rome’s system. Rome’s outer emission ring bans the oldest vehicles still on the road, roughly petrol Euro 2 and older, and a 2018 Euro 5 registration clears that with several classes to spare, checked by camera at the ring’s boundary.
The part that catches visitors out is separate: the historic-centre ZTL doesn’t run on Euro class at all. It’s a permit-and-hours system — during its gate hours, only vehicles specifically authorised for that zone may pass the varchi cameras, regardless of how clean the engine is. A Euro 5 petrol car that’s perfectly legal in the Fascia Verde still needs that separate authorisation to enter the Centro Storico during restricted hours.
Two systems, two different questions
- Fascia Verde — decided by Euro class; this car already clears it.
- Centro Storico ZTL — decided by permit and time of day, not emissions. Residents and registered vehicles hold permits; visitors typically arrange access through a hotel inside the zone, which can have a plate whitelisted for the stay.
Confusing the two is Rome’s most common visitor mistake: clearing the Fascia Verde does not clear the ZTL, and vice versa.
What getting the ZTL wrong actually costs
Unauthorised passage through a ZTL varchi camera during gate hours costs roughly EUR 83-332 per passage under the Italian traffic code — and each separate camera crossed can be billed separately, so one wrong turn can produce more than one fine. Italy pursues foreign-plated vehicles by post for years afterward.
Where to actually park
Skip the centre entirely if the itinerary allows it. Park-and-ride options at Saxa Rubra, Anagnina or EUR connect to the metro and reach central Rome in 15-25 minutes — cheaper and simpler than testing whether a given street sits inside ZTL gate hours.
Before you drive this petrol Euro 5 car into Rome
- ✅ The Fascia Verde is already cleared — Euro 5 is well above its petrol floor
- ✅ The Centro Storico ZTL is a separate permit system; check gate hours before assuming access
- ✅ If staying inside the ZTL, ask your hotel about whitelisting your plate in advance
- ✅ An unauthorised ZTL pass costs roughly EUR 83-332 per camera, not per day
- ✅ Park-and-ride outside both rings avoids the question entirely
