Can a petrol Euro 5 car enter Brussels?
Yes, by two full classes. Brussels tightened on 1 January 2026, following the Constitutional Court ruling of September 2025: diesel now needs Euro 6 and petrol, LPG and CNG need Euro 3. A 2014 Euro 5 petrol car is comfortably past that.
The zone covers all 19 communes of the Brussels-Capital Region and runs 24 hours a day, so there is no transit exemption and no quiet hour to slip through.
Registration is the separate test
There is no windscreen sticker in Brussels. The zone runs on plate registration, and the ANPR cameras check registration status alongside Euro class. That is why a compliant car can still be ticketed.

A first offence brings a warning letter; the fine can follow around three months later. Since 1 July 2026 a EUR 350 fine can be re-issued over a twelve-month period while a vehicle remains non-compliant.

- Confirm Euro 5 on the Certificate of Conformity rather than assuming it from the registration year.
- Keep proof of registration with the vehicle in case of a roadside check.
Exemptions, precisely
Electric and hydrogen vehicles are exempt, and so are oldtimers of 30 years or more. Hybrids are not a category here - a plug-in or conventional hybrid is assessed on its combustion engine’s Euro class, the same test this car passes. A car that cannot meet the standard can buy a day pass at EUR 35, capped at 24 passes a year.
One date to note for 2028
From 1 January 2028 Brussels refuses diesel Euro 6b, 6c and 6d-TEMP and petrol Euro 3, lifting the petrol minimum to Euro 4. A 2014 Euro 5 petrol car still clears that.
