Munich 2026: A 2010 Petrol Euro 5 Is Not the Ban's Target

Checked against official sources 20 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-19

Yes. Munich’s Dieselfahrverbot targets diesel vehicles only. Petrol cars need the green Umweltplakette, which requires Euro 1 or newer, and a 2010 petrol Euro 5 clears that by four classes.

Two rules, and this car meets one and ignores the other

Munich runs two restrictions that get confused constantly:

  • The green-sticker Umweltzone, which covers every engine type and asks for a regulated catalytic converter - Euro 1 and up for petrol.
  • The Dieselfahrverbot, layered on top since 1 February 2023, which bars diesel Euro 4 and worse from the Mittlerer Ring and everything inside it.

This is a petrol car, so only the first applies, and a 2010 Euro 5 is four classes past it.

Where the zone begins

The Umweltzone covers the Mittlerer Ring itself and everything inside it. The ring road is part of the zone rather than a bypass around it - worth knowing before you plan a route that skirts the centre.

The sticker requirement does not disappear

Being well clear of the floor does not remove the paperwork. Every vehicle inside the zone must display the green Umweltplakette. It costs EUR 5-15 from umwelt-plakette.de, a TUV station or a garage, is bought once, and lasts the life of the car’s current engine.

What skipping it costs

A missing sticker is a EUR 100 fine, which comes to about EUR 128.50 once the administrative fee is added. No point is entered in the Flensburg register. Enforcement is police spot checks plus camera monitoring.

The penalty attaches to the absent Plakette, not to any shortfall in emission class - so a car this far above the floor is not automatically safe without it on the windscreen.

The diesel detail most guides get wrong

If this were a diesel, the answer would depend on a distinction that is frequently misreported. Diesel Euro 4 and worse have been barred since February 2023. The further stage that would have excluded Euro 5 diesel was suspended and has not taken effect, so Euro 5 diesel still enters with a green sticker. The effective diesel minimum in Munich today is Euro 5, not Euro 6.

Exemptions alongside the sticker system

Electric and hydrogen vehicles, historic H-plate cars, emergency vehicles and military vehicles are outside the Umweltplakette requirement entirely. None applies here, because this car already qualifies on the ordinary petrol standard.
