Stuttgart 2026: The Diesel Bans Leave Petrol Untouched
The two bans that make Stuttgart Germany’s strictest city are written against diesel, and neither touches petrol. Two bans, one fuel
Stuttgart layers restrictions that no other German city has, and reading them in order makes the petrol position obvious:

Only the first line applies to a petrol car, and it applies to every car equally. Euro 6 diesel is unaffected by either ban; petrol is unaffected by both.
Why the petrol bar sits so low
The green badge maps to pollutant group 4, and that group was never defined by a single Euro number. For diesel it means Euro 4 or better, or Euro 3 with a particulate filter. For petrol it means a regulated catalytic converter, standard on German petrol cars since the early 1990s. A 2018 Euro 4 is several steps clear of a requirement it would have met at birth.
Eligibility still is not permission
The badge has to be bought and stuck to the glass. Police check inside the zone rather than at the boundary, and a qualifying car without the sticker pays the same EUR 100 as a car that never qualified. The badge is issued against the registration document, stays with the vehicle for life and works in every German zone, so it is worth ordering before leaving home if the car is foreign-registered.
The routes that stay open
Three through-routes are signed out of the diesel ban so particular districts remain reachable: Hafenbahnstrasse between the B10 and Oberturkheimer Strasse; Heerstrasse, Mittlere Filderstrasse and Neuhauser Strasse along the A8; and the B10 and B27a between Korntal-Muenchingen and Kornwestheim. They matter to a diesel driver rather than to this car, but they explain why a banned vehicle is sometimes seen inside the city limits.
