Rome 2026: Petrol Euro 4 Clears the Fascia Verde Ban
The Fascia Verde stops petrol, LPG and methane vehicles only up to Euro 2, so a 2018 petrol Euro 4 is two classes clear and may drive and park inside the ring. That says nothing about the ZTL Centro Storico, a separate gate that reads a permit list rather than an emission class — and a day inside without one costs EUR 83-332.
Can your car enter Rome?
Enter your vehicle's fuel + Euro class → instant verdict for Rome (ZTL). Fine if wrong: EUR 83-332 (Italian Traffic Code art. 7(14)) per unauthorised entry — and each camera you pass can be charged separately..
The emission ring, in the ordinance’s own words
Rome’s emission rule lives in ordinanza 145 of 30 October 2025, in force from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026. Inside the Fascia Verde it bars petrol, LPG and methane vehicles from pre-Euro 1 through Euro 2; diesel, dual-fuel and mixed-fuel vehicles through Euro 3; and two-wheelers through Euro 1. The restriction runs Monday to Saturday, around the clock, excluding mid-week public holidays.
Two details make this different from most emission zones. It covers driving and parking inside the ring, and it applies to residents’ own cars — the city’s notice is written about them. A 2018 petrol Euro 4 is outside all of it.
Exemptions, where they apply, are categorical rather than personal: vehicles serving people with disabilities, emergency and public-utility vehicles, waste and grounds-maintenance vehicles, historic and collector vehicles, and LPG or methane cars registered or converted before 1 November 2024.
The second gate reads a list, not an exhaust
Inside the ring sits the ZTL Centro Storico, and it asks a different question: is this plate authorised. Residents, permit holders, registered hotel guests, emergency and public-transport vehicles are on the list; everyone else is refused during gate hours, electric cars included. Two classes of margin on the Fascia Verde buys nothing at a varco.
The comune’s published hours:
- ZTL Centro Storico — Monday to Friday 06:30-18:00, Saturday 14:00-18:00, plus Friday and Saturday nights 23:00-03:00.
- ZTL Tridente — Monday to Friday 06:30-19:00, Saturday 10:00-19:00.
- Night ZTLs — Trastevere and San Lorenzo Wednesday to Saturday 21:30-03:00; Centro and Testaccio on Friday and Saturday nights 23:00-03:00.
Getting a plate onto the list
Accommodation inside the zone is the route. A hotel or B&B registers the plate with the Comune for the dates of the stay, and the entry has to exist before the camera reads you — after the fact is normally too late. Confirm it in writing rather than assuming reception handles it at check-in.
If your route never touches the core
Then the Fascia Verde clearance is the only rule in play and this car already satisfies it. Where a stay does fall inside the varchi, the park-and-ride lots at Saxa Rubra, Anagnina and EUR sit outside the ring and connect to the metro in 15-25 minutes, which removes the question rather than gambling on gate hours.
