Munich 2026: Petrol Euro 4 Only Needs the Green Badge

Checked against official sources 19 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-18

A 2018 petrol Euro 4 qualifies for the green Umweltplakette and enters Munich without further conditions. The city’s Dieselfahrverbot — diesel Euro 4 and worse refused across the Mittlerer Ring since 1 February 2023, until further notice — is written for diesel and does not reach a petrol car. What does reach it is the badge itself: drive in without one and the fine is EUR 100, about EUR 128.50 once fees are added.

Two rules, only one of which is yours

Munich layers a diesel access ban on top of an ordinary green-sticker Umweltzone, and the two get read as a single tightening. They are not.

The Dieselfahrverbot refuses diesel cars of Euro 4 and worse from the Mittlerer Ring and everything inside it, green badge or not, and it holds until further notice. Petrol cars are nowhere in its wording.

The Umweltzone requires the green Umweltplakette, pollutant group 4. For petrol the test is a regulated catalytic converter, which puts the practical floor at Euro 1. A 2018 Euro 4 petrol is not near it.

The badge is the only thing you can get wrong

Order it from umwelt-plakette.de or collect it at a TÜV or DEKRA station with the registration document. It costs EUR 5-15, goes on the windscreen and lasts the life of the car. Foreign-registered cars need it on the same terms as German ones — there is no visitor exemption, and “my car is clean” is not a defence at a roadside check when the windscreen is bare.

What enforcement looks like

Police spot checks and cameras, around the clock, across the whole zone. The fine is a flat EUR 100 under the federal catalogue, and the city puts the total at roughly EUR 128.50 once administrative fees are added. The Flensburg point that used to accompany it was abolished in May 2014, so there is no licence consequence.

Who skips the question entirely

Electric and hydrogen vehicles, H-plate historic cars, emergency and military vehicles are exempt from the sticker rule altogether. None of that is needed here — a petrol Euro 4 qualifies on its own terms.

Before you drive this petrol Euro 4 into Munich

  • ✅ Petrol qualifies for the green badge from Euro 1; a 2018 Euro 4 is well above it
  • ✅ Buy and display the Umweltplakette, EUR 5-15, before entering the Mittlerer Ring
  • ✅ The Dieselfahrverbot is diesel-only and does not apply to this car
  • ✅ Enforcement is 24/7 by spot check and camera inside and on the ring
  • ✅ A missing badge, not the Euro class, is the realistic route to the EUR 100 fine
