Amsterdam Never Checks Petrol: 2018 Euro 4 In (2026)
Yes. Amsterdam’s Milieuzone screens diesel cars and nothing else, so a 2018 petrol Euro 4 may drive anywhere inside the Ring A10 with no sticker, no registration and no permit. The EUR 130 penalty you may have read about belongs to the diesel rule (amsterdam.nl).

Why there is nothing to do before you drive in
Most European low emission zones ask two questions: does the car meet the standard, and has it been registered or stickered. Amsterdam asks neither of a petrol car. The municipality’s zone rules set a minimum emission class 5 for diesel passenger cars inside the Ring A10, tightened from class 4 on 1 January 2025, and set no equivalent for petrol. There is also no sticker to buy anywhere in the Netherlands: ANPR cameras read the plate and check it against the RDW vehicle register, and foreign plates are looked up through European vehicle data exchange.
The practical consequence is that this car needs no preparation. Carry the registration document, as you would anywhere, and drive in.
What the EUR 130 figure actually covers
The penalty published for the Amsterdam milieuzone is EUR 130 for a car, van or bus and EUR 320 for a lorry — the nationally fixed Mulder tariff rather than a city charge, set out in the Beleidsregels ontheffingen milieuzone Amsterdam 2026 (lokaleregelgeving.overheid.nl). It is charged when a diesel below emission class 5 is photographed inside the ring. A petrol car cannot trigger it.
The trap is the hire desk, not your own car
If the same trip involves a rental, the question changes shape. A Dutch or German fleet diesel first registered around 2013-2014 can sit at emission class 4 and is now refused inside the A10, while your own petrol car of the same vintage would be ignored. Read the emission class off the rental’s registration document at the desk rather than assuming a recent-looking car complies.
Where the zone begins and ends
The Milieuzone covers everything inside the Ring A10, 24 hours a day, every day, and has been running since 2007. A separate zero-emission zone inside the S100 applies to vans and lorries only; a private car is judged purely on the milieuzone rule. There is no transit exemption, but for a petrol car there is nothing to be exempt from.
Quick check before you go

- ✅ Carry the registration document showing fuel type and emission class
- ✅ If the trip includes a hire diesel, check it meets emission class 5
- ✅ Vans and lorries face the separate S100 zero-emission rule
