Brussels 2026: Euro 4 Petrol Passes, the Plate Must Too

Checked against official sources 20 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-19

The engine is not the problem: petrol needs Euro 3 here and this car is Euro 4. The problem is the list. Brussels matches every camera capture against its registered-plate database, and a compliant foreign car that was never entered is fined EUR 150 — against EUR 350 for a car that genuinely fails. Registration is free, valid five years, and allowed up to five days after you first enter.

Can your car enter Brussels?

Enter your vehicle's fuel + Euro class → instant verdict for Brussels (LEZ). Fine if wrong: EUR 350 (non-compliant vehicle); EUR 150 (foreign vehicle not registered, even if compliant); EUR 25 (incorrect registration data). Warning letter for the first offence..

Two tests, and only one of them is about the car

Think of it as a clean car and a known car. The first is settled by the certificate of conformity: Euro 4 petrol, comfortably above the Euro 3 floor, and still above the Euro 4 floor that arrives on 1 January 2028. The second is settled by a form. Belgian plates are already known to the system, Dutch plates are read automatically, and every other foreign plate is invisible until someone types it in.

What the region charges, and for what

  • EUR 350 — the vehicle does not meet the emission standard
  • EUR 150 — the vehicle meets it, but a foreign plate was never registered
  • EUR 25 — the registration was filed with incorrect information

A first offence brings a warning letter rather than an immediate fine, and the fine itself can arrive around three months later. Since 1 July 2026 the EUR 350 can be re-issued across twelve months for a vehicle that stays non-compliant.

The five-day window is real, but thin

The portal states that a vehicle can be registered before entering the LEZ or within five days of entering. That is genuine slack for someone who discovers the rule at a Brussels hotel desk, and it is still better used before departure: the registration is free either way, lasts five years, and turns the EUR 150 exposure into nothing.

A car that cannot meet the standard has a different option

Day passes exist at EUR 35, capped at 24 a year per vehicle. They are irrelevant to this car, which qualifies outright, but they are the reason a non-compliant vehicle is occasionally seen inside the zone legitimately.

Brussels checklist for this car

  • ✅ Confirm Euro 4 from the registration document rather than the 2014 date
  • ✅ Register the plate at lez.brussels before departure — free, five minutes, five years
  • ✅ Use the five-day window only as a safety net, not a plan
  • ✅ Skip the step only if the car is Dutch-registered
  • ✅ Expect a warning letter first, then the fine around three months later
