Berlin 2026: A 2010 Petrol Euro 4 Is Three Classes Clear
Berlin’s Umweltzone asks petrol cars for a regulated catalytic converter — effectively Euro 1 — so a 2010 Euro 4 is three classes clear. The green Umweltplakette still has to be on the windscreen to prove it.

A much lower bar than diesel gets
The two fuels are treated very differently here. Diesel needs Euro 4, or Euro 3 with a retrofitted particulate filter, while petrol only needs a regulated catalytic converter — Euro 1 and newer in practice. A 2010 Euro 4 petrol car was never a borderline case, and no tightening is scheduled that would change that.
The sticker is the thing being enforced
Since 2021 every German Umweltzone has required the green sticker for pollutant group 4, and qualifying on paper is not a substitute for displaying it. The Berlin environment department sells it for EUR 5 at the city’s vehicle registration authority, or about EUR 6 ordered online with postage through the official plakette portal. It is a one-off: the disc stays valid as long as the engine does.
What a bare windscreen costs
A flat EUR 100, with no reduction for a car that would have qualified. The penalty point in the Flensburg register that once came with it was dropped in 2014, so the fine is the whole consequence — but it is issued on the sticker, not on the emissions, which is why clean cars collect it.
The zone is smaller than the city
The Umweltzone covers roughly 88 square kilometres inside the S-Bahn ring, about a tenth of Berlin’s area, and more than a million of its residents live in it. The southern city motorway with its slip roads and the Elsenbruecke are deliberately excluded, so a transit drive can skirt the zone entirely; Kanzowstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg, just outside the ring, is included anyway.
Who skips the sticker
Electric and hydrogen vehicles, cars with historic H-plate registration, emergency vehicles and military vehicles are exempt. None of that applies to an ordinary 2010 petrol car, though a vehicle approaching its thirtieth year is worth checking against the H-plate rules.
