Stuttgart 2026: Euro 6 Diesel Clears Both Diesel Bans

Stuttgart runs two diesel bans: Euro 4 and older refused across the whole city since 1 January 2019, and Euro 5 and older refused inside the kleine Umweltzone — the Talkessel plus Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen — since 1 July 2020. A 2018 diesel Euro 6 is outside both. What remains is the green Umweltplakette, EUR 5-15, with EUR 100 for driving in without it.

Why Stuttgart needs two answers and Euro 6 needs one

In most German cities the emission question has a single answer for the whole urban area. Stuttgart has two, because a second, tighter ban was drawn inside the first.

• City-wide, since 1 January 2019: diesel Euro 4 and older refused, green badge or not.
• Kleine Umweltzone, since 1 July 2020: Euro 5 diesel refused as well, across the central basin and the districts of Bad Cannstatt, Feuerbach and Zuffenhausen.

Euro 6 diesel is unaffected by either. That is what makes this verdict simple: the address does not have to be checked against a map, because every part of the city admits this class.

The badge is not optional

The bans govern which diesels may be in the city. The Umweltzone separately requires the green Umweltplakette — pollutant group 4 — on the windscreen of every vehicle inside it. Order it from umwelt-plakette.de or collect it at a TÜV or DEKRA station with the registration document, for EUR 5-15. Foreign-registered cars need it on the same terms; there is no visitor exemption and nothing to register against the plate.

The exemptions, for completeness

Three signed through-routes stay open to diesels that are otherwise banned: Hafenbahnstraße between the B10 and Obertürkheimer Straße; Heerstraße, Mittlere Filderstraße and Neuhauser Straße along the A8; and the B10 and B27a between Korntal-Münchingen and Kornwestheim. General exemptions cover commercial delivery traffic, people with certain disabilities, medical emergencies, journeys to and from park-and-ride car parks, and two- and three-wheeled motor vehicles.

A Euro 6 diesel needs none of this. It is worth knowing only if an older second car joins the trip.

Enforcement

Police spot checks and cameras, 24 hours a day, across both zones. The penalty for breaching either ban, or for driving the Umweltzone without a badge, is EUR 100.
