Munich 2026: A 2018 Euro 6 Diesel Clears Both Tests

Checked against official sources 19 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-18

Munich keeps diesel cars rated Euro 4/IV and worse out of the Umweltzone until further notice, and admits Euro 5/V or better on a green Umweltplakette. A 2018 Euro 6 diesel is two steps clear of that line — the sticker is the only errand left.

The line Munich actually draws

The City of Munich publishes the restriction in one sentence: a Zufahrtsbeschränkung für Diesel-Fahrzeuge mit den Abgasnormen Diesel, Euro 4/IV und schlechter, in force bis auf Weiteres, while Diesel-Kraftfahrzeuge mit der Abgasnorm 5/V oder besser may drive in the zone provided they carry a green Umweltplakette (stadt.muenchen.de). A diesel first registered in 2018 to Euro 6 is comfortably inside that permission.

The tighter stage that would have caught Euro 5 diesels was suspended and has never taken effect. If you own a Euro 5 car that pending step is the thing to track; for a Euro 6 car it changes nothing either way.

The sticker is the part people forget

The Umweltplakette and the Dieselfahrverbot are two different checks that happen to cover the same streets. Clearing the diesel ban does not exempt you from the badge.

  1. Buy the green Plakette before you travel — EUR 5-15 from a TÜV or DEKRA station or umwelt-plakette.de, valid for the life of the car.
  2. Read the emission key off the registration document, not the model year — the Euro class on paper is what an officer checks.
  3. Nothing else applies. There is no permit, no daily charge and no registration step for a compliant car.

What a missing sticker costs

EUR 100 under the federal Bußgeldkatalog. Munich itself puts the total at roughly EUR 128.50 once administrative fees are added, and the offence carries no Flensburg point — none has been recorded for it since May 2014. That is a paperwork penalty, not an emissions one: the car itself was never the problem.

Where the zone begins

The Umweltzone takes in the Mittlerer Ring and everything inside it, so a hotel or car park chosen inside the ring puts you in the zone for the whole stay. That matters more for a Euro 4 diesel than for this car, but it is worth knowing before you book.

Quick compliance checklist for Munich

  • ✅ Confirm Euro 6 from the registration document
  • ✅ Green Umweltplakette fitted before you cross the Mittlerer Ring
  • ✅ No action needed on the suspended Euro 5 stage
  • ✅ EUR 100 (about EUR 128.50 with fees) is the only realistic risk, and only if the sticker is missing
