Madrid ZBE 2026: a 2018 Euro 6 Diesel Is Label C, Allowed

Checked against official sources 19 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-18

Madrid 360’s citywide ZBE excludes the unlabelled category — diesel below Euro 4 and petrol below Euro 3. A 2018 diesel certified to Euro 6 sits two steps above that line and carries the DGT label C, so it enters freely. The label itself costs EUR 5 and is issued to Spanish registrations only.

Can a diesel Euro 6 car enter Madrid?

Yes. Madrid’s ZBE covers the whole municipality and works off the DGT environmental label rather than the Euro number directly. A diesel certified to Euro 6 and registered in 2018 is a label C car, and label C circulates without restriction. The category Madrid shuts out is the one with no label at all — diesel below Euro 4, petrol below Euro 3 — and the moratorium that had protected unlabelled cars on the Madrid register ran out on 1 January 2026.

The part most drivers get wrong is the sticker. The distintivo ambiental costs EUR 5 at a Correos office or through the DGT’s own channels — it is not free — and it is issued against a Spanish registration only (sede.dgt.gob.es). There is no version of it for a foreign plate, which means a visitor cannot buy one however early they plan.

What you still need to do

  1. If the car is Spanish-registered: get the EUR 5 label and display it. Order it through the DGT’s own portal rather than a reseller charging a markup.
  2. If the car is foreign-registered: there is no sticker to get. Carry the registration document or Certificate of Conformity showing the Euro class, because that is what the emission standard is read from if you are stopped.
  3. Check the class on paper, not the year. Euro 6 on the certificate is what counts; a 2018 build date on its own proves nothing.

If you can’t enter: what to do instead

  • Park & Ride. Because the ZBE is the whole municipality, the park-and-ride sites sit outside the city boundary on the Metro and Cercanias lines — a few euros a day plus a transport pass, against a EUR 200 penalty.
  • Hire a labelled car. Any recent Spanish rental already carries a C, ECO or zero label, which removes the question entirely.
  • Do not count on a day permit. Madrid publishes exemptions and authorisations for specific categories — disabled badge holders, emergency and historic vehicles among them — but not a pass that lets an unlabelled car in for the day.

How Madrid’s ZBE is enforced

The zone has been active since 2022 and is monitored by ANPR cameras and police, 24 hours a day. Cameras read plates automatically and check them against the vehicle register, so there is no practical way to slip through. The penalty is EUR 200, halved to EUR 100 if you pay promptly, and it is issued per entry rather than per day — two trips through a gantry can mean two penalties.

Quick compliance checklist for Madrid

  • ✅ Confirm the Euro class on the certificate, not the model year
  • ✅ Spanish plate: buy the EUR 5 DGT label and display it
  • ✅ Foreign plate: no label exists — carry the registration document instead
  • ✅ The zone is the whole municipality and runs 24/7, with no off-peak window
  • ✅ Keep proof of any exemption in the car
  • ✅ The penalty is EUR 200, or EUR 100 paid promptly — Park & Ride costs far less
