London 2026: Euro 6 Diesel Is Free of ULEZ, Not CC

Checked against official sources 19 Sep 2026 · Next review 2026-12-18

A 2018 diesel built to Euro 6 meets London’s ULEZ standard exactly, so the GBP 12.50 daily charge never applies. What does apply, if your route reaches central London in charging hours, is the unrelated Congestion Charge — GBP 18 a day whatever the engine.

ULEZ: nothing to buy, nothing to register

TfL asks for Euro 6 on diesel and Euro 4 on petrol. A 2018 Euro 6 diesel sits on the right side of that line, and because there is no ULEZ sticker at all — cameras read the plate and check it against TfL’s records — a compliant car has nothing to arrange. The zone reaches every one of the 32 boroughs and the City of London, but not the M25 itself, and it runs every day except Christmas Day.

If you want certainty before you set off, TfL’s free vehicle checker answers by number plate; the V5C log book carries the same information on paper.

The Congestion Charge is the bill people don’t expect

This is where a clean diesel still pays. The Congestion Charge covers central London only, and TfL sets it at GBP 18 if you pay on the day or in advance, GBP 21 if you pay by midnight on the third day after travel (tfl.gov.uk). Emissions are irrelevant to it — almost every car pays.

The hours matter as much as the boundary: 07:00 to 18:00 Monday to Friday, and 12:00 to 18:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. An evening arrival into the same streets costs nothing at all.

What going wrong costs

  • ULEZ, for a non-compliant car: GBP 180, reduced to GBP 90 if paid within 14 days, on top of the GBP 12.50 that was missed. Not a risk for this car.
  • Congestion Charge, if you forget: the penalty charge notice regime is separate from ULEZ, so pay on the day rather than relying on memory.

Planning around it with this car

Because the emissions side is settled, the only London question left is geography. Staying outside the central zone, or arriving after 18:00, removes the charge entirely; a hotel inside it on a weekday means GBP 18 per charging day, not per entry.
