Antwerp 2026: Euro 6 Diesel In, EUR 150 If Unlisted
Antwerp’s diesel floor is Euro 5, and it stayed there: the tightening pencilled in for 1 January 2026 was scrapped by the Flemish Government on 28 November 2025, not postponed. A 2018 Euro 6 is a class above the rule that survived and would have met the one that did not. The remaining step is administrative — a free, one-off plate registration, or EUR 150 for a first offence.

The step that was cancelled, not delayed
Flanders had planned to lift the Antwerp minimums from 1 January 2026. On 28 November 2025 the Flemish Government withdrew the plan outright, so diesel Euro 5 and petrol Euro 2 keep their automatic access rather than losing it. The next decision point is an air-quality evaluation during 2027.
For a Euro 6 diesel this is a non-event twice over: it clears the standard that remains, and it would have cleared the standard that was dropped.
The part that actually fines people
There is no sticker in Antwerp. The zone runs on plate recognition, and vehicles already in the Belgian and Flemish registers are admitted automatically. A foreign plate is not in those registers, so it has to be entered once, free of charge, at slimnaarantwerpen.be — and the city allows this up to one day after you drive in, which makes a forgotten registration recoverable the next morning in a way a fine is not.
Dutch plates are the single exception: Antwerp reads them from the RDW register automatically.
The fine ladder
- EUR 150 — first offence.
- EUR 250 — second within 12 months of the first.
- EUR 350 — third or any later one inside that 12-month window.
Notices arrive by registered post, and objections go back the same way within 30 days; e-mailed objections are not accepted. The city also warns that any demand for payment by SMS or WhatsApp is a scam.
Boundary and hours
The zone covers the city centre plus part of Linkeroever on the left bank of the Scheldt, signed at every entry point and monitored by ANPR cameras 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for every vehicle type including campers and coaches. The ring motorway is outside the zone, so a bypass skips it altogether.
One more Belgian trap
A Flemish registration covers Ghent as well as Antwerp, but it is not valid in Brussels, which runs a separate system and asks diesels for Euro 6. A route through both needs both registrations.
