Rome 2026: Euro 6 Diesel Clears the Ring, Not the ZTL
The Fascia Verde bars diesel only up to Euro 3, so a 2014 Euro 6 drives the wide ring without restriction, Monday to Saturday included. The historic core is a separate gate with a separate logic: the ZTL Centro Storico runs on permits, not emissions, and an unauthorised pass costs EUR 83-332 under Article 7(14) — once per zone per day, however many cameras log the car.
Can your car enter Rome?
Enter your vehicle's fuel + Euro class → instant verdict for Rome (ZTL). Fine if wrong: EUR 83-332 (Italian Traffic Code art. 7(14)) per unauthorised entry — and each camera you pass can be charged separately..
Two rules, asked in order
First: may the car be in Rome at all? That is the Fascia Verde’s question, and ordinanza 145 of 30 October 2025 answers it by class — petrol, LPG and methane up to Euro 2 and diesel, dual-fuel and mixed-fuel up to Euro 3 may not drive or park inside the ring, Monday to Saturday, around the clock, excluding mid-week public holidays. The order runs from 1 November 2025 to 31 October 2026 and it applies to residents’ own cars as well as visitors’. A Euro 6 diesel is three classes above the line.
Second: may it enter the historic core? That is the ZTL’s question, and the engine is irrelevant to it.
What the ZTL actually checks
A list. Residents with a registered permit, authorised categories such as deliveries and disabled access, emergency and public-transport vehicles — and visitors only where a hotel or B and B inside the zone registers the plate with the Comune. There is no visitor day pass and no sticker. Confirm the registration with the property in writing before arriving; the front desk sorting it on the day is how notices get issued.
The gates, by district and hour
| Zone | When the gate is live |
|---|---|
| Centro Storico | Mon-Fri 06:30-18:00; Sat 14:00-18:00 |
| Tridente | Mon-Fri 06:30-19:00; Sat 10:00-19:00 |
| Trastevere, San Lorenzo | Wed-Sat 21:30-03:00 |
| Centro, Testaccio | Fri and Sat nights 23:00-03:00 |
Since 14 December 2024 repeat passes into the same zone on one day are one violation, so it is a second zone or a second day that generates another notice.
A suspension worth not misreading
The official ZTL page carries a notice suspending a new loading and unloading regime for goods vehicles in the ZTL A1 Tridente — mayoral ordinance 105 of 31 July 2026, suspended by the Campidoglio on 4 September 2026 pending a hearing at the TAR Lazio on 23 September. It concerns freight categories N1, N2 and N3, not cars, and changes nothing for this vehicle.
Rome checklist for this car
- ✅ Treat the Fascia Verde as settled: Euro 6 diesel is well above the Euro 3 bar
- ✅ Decide separately whether the itinerary needs the ZTL at all
- ✅ If it does, get the hotel to register the plate before arrival, in writing
- ✅ Check the gate hours for the specific district, including the night zones
- ✅ Assume each day in the zone is a separate EUR 83-332 exposure
