Munich 2026: A 2010 Euro 6 Diesel Is Worth Checking

Start with the certificate, not the verdict

Most of these questions are answered by comparing two numbers. This one has a prior step. Euro 6 diesel type approval began appearing around 2014, which makes a 2010-registered car holding it an exception: typically an imported vehicle, one re-registered later, or a retrofit rather than the original build.

So the useful action here is documentary. Read the emission class from the Certificate of Conformity or the emission key on the registration document. If it confirms Euro 6, everything below applies. If it shows Euro 5, the car is still admitted today but sits exactly where the suspended stage was aimed. If it shows Euro 4, Munich refuses it.

What the rule says once the class is settled

The Dieselfahrverbot, in force since 1 February 2023 and holding until further notice, keeps diesel cars of Euro 4 and worse out of the extended zone whether or not they carry a green badge. Euro 5 diesel is not banned — the second stage was suspended and never took effect — and Euro 6 has never been in scope of either step.

The badge applies regardless

Clearing the diesel ban is not the same as clearing the Umweltzone. Every vehicle inside it needs the green Umweltplakette, pollutant group 4, at EUR 5-15 from umwelt-plakette.de or over the counter at a TÜV or DEKRA station with the registration papers. Resellers charging more are selling the identical document. Foreign plates have no exemption.

Enforcement and the bill

Police spot checks and cameras run 24 hours a day across the zone. The penalty is EUR 100 under the federal catalogue, roughly EUR 128.50 once administrative fees are added, with no Flensburg point — that ended in May 2014. For a documented Euro 6, the only realistic path to that bill is a missing badge.
