London 2026: A Genuine Euro 6 Diesel Pays No Charge
If the certificate genuinely reads Euro 6, the car is inside London’s diesel standard and owes nothing — no charge, no badge, no registration. The caution is the date: Euro 6 became compulsory for new registrations only in September 2015, so a 2010 diesel is far more often Euro 5, which owes GBP 12.50 for each day it is driven. Check the plate before the trip, not at the camera.

One standard, two possible answers
TfL publishes two figures for cars and no others: petrol Euro 4, diesel Euro 6. There is no partial credit and no discount for a nearly compliant engine. What makes this particular car worth checking is that the model year and the emission class point in different directions — the plate says 2010, the requirement points at cars typically registered from late 2015. Only the paperwork resolves it.
Where the answer is written
- The V5C or certificate of conformity. The Euro class is stated there; a dealer listing or a history site is not evidence.
- TfL’s vehicle checker. Enter the registration and the answer comes back for that plate, including many non-UK registrations.
- The registration document, for a foreign plate the checker does not hold. TfL accepts it as proof of the standard.
If it comes back Euro 5
Nothing is barred. London prices non-compliance rather than refusing it: GBP 12.50 for each day the car moves inside the zone, once a day however many times the boundary is crossed, and nothing at all for a day the car stays parked. The window to pay runs to midnight on the third day after the journey, after which a GBP 180 penalty charge notice goes to the registered keeper, halved to GBP 90 within 14 days.
What never applies either way
No sticker. No permit. No pre-registration for a compliant car. The zone is camera-read from end to end, and the only thing a driver ever does is check the plate and, if necessary, pay.
London checklist for this car
- ✅ Read the Euro class off the V5C or certificate of conformity, not the 2010 plate
- ✅ Run the registration through TfL’s free checker before setting off
- ✅ Keep the registration document with you if the car is on a foreign plate
- ✅ If it is Euro 5, budget GBP 12.50 per driving day and pay within three days
- ✅ Ignore any offer of a London emission sticker — the zone issues none
